Wittekind is an ongoing series centering on a former Second World War air raid bunker in Aachen, Germany — an architecture marked by a violent past that became the unlikely home of three Indian women. The work asks how such a place is transformed by the lives lived within it: how history, space, and memory are reinterpreted not through grand gestures, but through the accumulation of everyday life and personal perspective.

Combining archival material with her own photographs, Janssens approaches this singular building with a gaze that is at once documentary, poetic, and gently humorous.

Wittekind is rooted in extensive research into the history of Aachen, developed in collaboration with historians and contemporary witnesses. The work was shortlisted for the Otto Steinert Prize 2026.
